Elegant carriages file through the Cork Hill gate of Dublin Castle beneath the statue of Lady Justice, watched by a crowd that runs from brightly dressed children and soldiers to shadowy figures in the cold. Rose Barton paints the levée as a misty winter afternoon — and, quietly, as a study of the class divisions of Victorian Dublin.

Critics have called the work a "funereal depiction of a social class and an empire," drawing a line between Barton's eye and George Moore's novel A Drama in Muslin. One of the finest Irish watercolourists of her generation, Barton made city life her subject, worked in a delicate, atmospheric style, and became the second Irishwoman elected to the Royal Watercolour Society.
