Frederic William Burton's Cliffs at Howth hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland — black chalk and watercolour on the rock face of Dublin Bay, as an archival art print, framed or unframed.

The painter of The Meeting on the Turret Stairs working outdoors with the same precision, on geology and sea light.

About this work

Cliffs at Howth, County Dublin is by the Irish artist Frederic William Burton (1816–1900), better known for The Meeting on the Turret Stairs. It is a drawing of the cliff face on the Howth peninsula at the north end of Dublin Bay. The National Gallery of Ireland records no date for it, so none is given here. The original is black chalk and watercolour on paper, 26.5 × 37.2 cm, and is held by the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.2364), bequeathed by Margaret McNair Stokes in 1900 — the same bequest that brought the Turret Stairs into the collection. This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.

Hangs well with

Burton could not tolerate the smell of oil paint, so the work is watercolour and drawing throughout — one hand, one medium.
