The Upper Lake at Glendalough, in wash on buff paper, by Christopher Machell.
Two small figures sit on the rocks at the water's edge while the lake runs away between towering, bare mountain flanks and a pale cloudy sky opens above. The scale is the point: tiny people, a vast glen. Machell built the view from soft grey wash on buff paper, on a sheet about 31 × 40 cm. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
About the Artist
Christopher Machell (1747–1827) was a draughtsman who recorded the Irish countryside in the late eighteenth century, from the Wicklow glens to the Dublin demesnes and the north. His wash drawings are among the National Gallery of Ireland's best records of how those places looked.
