The Salmon Leap at Leixlip, County Kildare, in ink and wash, by Christopher Machell.
Layered rock ledges rise at the left, trees lean over the river, and the water is left almost white, a pale rush of paper broken by a few grey stones and the arch of an old bridge beyond. Leaving the water blank lets the spray and light read through. It is a small sheet, about 21 × 28 cm, in soft sepia and grey. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
About the Artist
Christopher Machell (1747–1827) was a draughtsman who recorded the Irish countryside in the late eighteenth century, from the Wicklow glens to the Dublin demesnes and the north. His wash drawings are among the National Gallery of Ireland's best records of how those places looked.
