The Rustic Arch at Luttrelstown Castle, County Dublin, in ink and wash, by Christopher Machell.
A towered stone gateway with a rough, rounded arch stands half-hidden under a canopy of oak leaves, drawn in fine pen lines and pale blue-grey wash. Light breaks through the trees at the right and a boulder sits at the foot of the wall. It is a small sheet, about 17 × 25 cm, full of detail. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
About the Artist
Christopher Machell (1747–1827) was a draughtsman who recorded the Irish countryside in the late eighteenth century, from the Wicklow glens to the Dublin demesnes and the north. His wash drawings are among the National Gallery of Ireland's best records of how those places looked.
