John Butler Yeats's portrait of Augusta Gregory, painted from life in 1903, hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland — playwright, folklorist and co-founder of the Abbey Theatre, as an archival art print, framed or unframed.

Her gaze carries quiet strength against a subdued, painterly ground. The year after this portrait, the Abbey opened its doors.

The Artwork

Lady Gregory was a central figure in Ireland’s cultural renaissance, opening her home at Coole Park to writers and artists including W.B. Yeats, Synge, and many others. In this portrait, John Butler Yeats sets her against a subdued, painterly background, allowing her thoughtful expression and finely observed features to carry the composition. It is both a tribute to her character and a key image of the Irish Literary Revival.

About this work

This portrait of Lady Augusta Gregory (1852–1932) was painted by the Irish artist John Butler Yeats (1839–1922) in 1903. Gregory was a folklorist, playwright and translator, and with W.B. Yeats and Edward Martyn a founder of the Abbey Theatre; John Butler Yeats was W.B.'s father and the finest Irish portraitist of his generation. The National Gallery of Ireland also holds a separate portrait of her by William Orpen. The original is oil on canvas, 62 × 52 cm, and hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.1318), presented by the Friends of the National Collections of Ireland in 1956. This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
