Jellett returned to religious subjects throughout her career, fusing the geometric language of cubism — learned directly from André Lhote and Albert Gleizes in Paris — with traditional Christian iconography. The Virgin and Child Enthroned takes one of art history's oldest compositions and rebuilds it in interlocking planes of colour, treating faith and form as the same problem.
Mainie Jellett (1897-1944), born in Dublin, studied under William Orpen before training in Paris with Andre Lhote and Albert Gleizes. With Evie Hone she exhibited the first abstract paintings shown in Ireland in 1923, and went on to found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. Her work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
