Built from layered greens, greys and blues in rhythmic geometric forms, Single Element shows Jellett's mature cubist language: analytical structure carrying a sense of order she understood in spiritual terms. It is reported to have been exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris in 1938 among the students of her mentor Albert Gleizes, and to have passed through the collection of the artist's sister, Bay Jellett — details worth confirming against the catalogue record before relying on them.
Mainie Jellett (1897-1944), born in Dublin, studied under William Orpen before training in Paris with Andre Lhote and Albert Gleizes. With Evie Hone she exhibited the first abstract paintings shown in Ireland in 1923, and went on to found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. Her work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
