Powerscourt Waterfall by Mainie Jellett – Canvas Print
Jellett takes Wicklow's best known cascade and resolves it into colour and movement rather than description — water read as rhythm and form. Painted in gouache, it shows her applying the geometric discipline of her Paris training to an Irish landscape subject.
Mainie Jellett (1897-1944), born in Dublin, studied under William Orpen before training in Paris with Andre Lhote and Albert Gleizes. With Evie Hone she exhibited the first abstract paintings shown in Ireland in 1923, and went on to found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. Her work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
