I Have Trodden the Winepress Alone by Mainie Jellett – Canvas Print

Taking its title from the Book of Isaiah, I Have Trodden the Winepress Alone is among the major religious works of Jellett's final years: a solitary ascending figure built from interlocking planes of rhythm, geometry and colour. Devotional in subject, it rests on the same systematic cubist scaffolding as her abstract painting — faith and modernism held in a single structure.

Mainie Jellett (1897-1944), born in Dublin, studied under William Orpen before training in Paris with Andre Lhote and Albert Gleizes. With Evie Hone she exhibited the first abstract paintings shown in Ireland in 1923, and went on to found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. Her work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
