Maclise shows the seventeenth-century French landscape painter Claude Lorrain at work in the open air, seated beneath a tree with a companion at his shoulder. The oil on panel is small, only 28 × 33 cm, and dates from 1853. It is in the National Gallery of Ireland.
About the Artist
Daniel Maclise (1806–1870), born in Cork, became one of the foremost history painters of Victorian Britain, best remembered for the vast murals he painted in the Palace of Westminster. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
