Works like this came out of her study with Albert Gleizes in Paris, where she learned to build a picture by translating and rotating forms through a set sequence rather than by improvising — which is why the result reads as quiet and ordered rather than expressive.
Mainie Jellett (1897-1944), born in Dublin, studied under William Orpen before training in Paris with Andre Lhote and Albert Gleizes. With Evie Hone she exhibited the first abstract paintings shown in Ireland in 1923, and went on to found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. Her work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
