Hennessy — born in County Cork, trained in the Pre-Raphaelite tradition, and later celebrated on both sides of the Atlantic — brought an Irishman's eye to every canvas he painted. The red underpainting beneath the foliage gives the scene its warmth. The stillness gives it its weight.
