A woman in a blue dress stands at a tall arched window, one hand on the sill, looking out over the rooftops. Behind her a green-shaded lamp and a chandelier hold the room's light against the pale street outside. Orpen painted it in oil on canvas in 1901; it measures 103 × 87 cm. It is in the National Gallery of Ireland.
About the Artist
William Orpen (1878–1931), born in Stillorgan, County Dublin, trained at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art and the Slade in London and became one of the most sought-after portrait painters of his day. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
