A sepia aquatint of the Secretary of State's house above the River Liffey at Palmerston, County Dublin, by Jonathan Fisher.
The Liffey bends in a wide, still curve below a wooded hillside, with a handful of cattle resting on the far bank and two figures watching the water in the foreground. The house sits among the trees above, and low hills fade into the distance. It is an eighteenth-century country scene in soft brown tones. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
About the Artist
Jonathan Fisher (1735–1809) was an Irish landscape painter who made his name publishing views of Irish scenery as sepia aquatints. His prints record Dublin, its harbour and its countryside as they looked in the 1790s. The National Gallery of Ireland holds a group of his views.
