The Round Tower at Glendalough, seen from Temple-na-Skellig, in wash on buff paper, by Christopher Machell.
A stone-roofed ruin crouches among trees in the foreground while the glen opens beyond it between steep mountain sides, the round tower rising small and upright in the distance. Two figures rest on the grass. Machell built the whole view from soft grey washes on buff paper, on a sheet about 31 × 40 cm. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
About the Artist
Christopher Machell (1747–1827) was a draughtsman who recorded the Irish countryside in the late eighteenth century, from the Wicklow glens to the Dublin demesnes and the north. His wash drawings are among the National Gallery of Ireland's best records of how those places looked.
