Glendalough's Lower Lake with the ruined churches of Saint Saviour and Saint Kevin, in wash on buff paper, by Christopher Machell.
A heavy, clouded sky presses down on the glen, where a ruin overgrown with ivy sits among trees in the foreground and two small figures rest by it. Beyond, the valley narrows between dark mountain walls toward the lake. Machell worked the whole scene in grey wash on buff paper, on a sheet about 31 × 40 cm. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
About the Artist
Christopher Machell (1747–1827) was a draughtsman who recorded the Irish countryside in the late eighteenth century, from the Wicklow glens to the Dublin demesnes and the north. His wash drawings are among the National Gallery of Ireland's best records of how those places looked.
