Saint Lawrence's Gate in Drogheda, in graphite, ink and watercolour, by George Petrie.
The medieval gate towers over a wide, pale street of thatched and slated houses, with small figures gathered in the road beneath its arch. Petrie drew it in 1819 in graphite, ink and watercolour on a sheet of about 18 × 23 cm, washing the stone in cool greys and the roofs in soft yellow. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
About the Artist
George Petrie (1790–1866), born in Dublin, was a landscape painter and antiquarian who travelled Ireland recording its ruins, round towers and castles. He also collected traditional Irish music, and his watercolours are among the most valued early records of the Irish landscape. The National Gallery of Ireland holds a large group of his work.
