Patron's Day at the Seven Churches, Glendalough, in oil on canvas, by Maria Spilsbury Taylor.
Pilgrims and families crowd the green floor of the glen below the round tower, eating, praying and talking in groups, while a figure in white stands at the centre and the mountains rise steeply behind. A patron day was the yearly gathering at a holy site on the saint's feast day, part devotion and part fair; at Glendalough it honoured Saint Kevin. Taylor painted the scene around 1816 on a canvas more than a metre wide. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
