She inspired some of the greatest love poems ever written. Now she can take her place on your wall.
Maud Gonne McBride — John Butler Yeats, 1907
W.B. Yeats wrote about Maud Gonne for decades. She was his muse, his obsession, the woman he proposed to four times and never won. He wrote "When You Are Old" for her. He wrote "No Second Troy" about her. He couldn't stop. But Maud Gonne was never just someone's muse — she was an actress, a suffragist, a fearless nationalist who co-founded Inghinidhe na hÉireann and devoted her life to Irish independence. John Butler Yeats — W.B.'s father, and one of Ireland's finest portrait painters — painted her in 1907 using delicate graphite and watercolour. Not as an icon. As a person. The result is one of the most quietly powerful portraits in the National Gallery of Ireland. This canvas print brings it into your home.
About the Artist
John Butler Yeats (1839–1922) had a gift that eluded many of his contemporaries — he painted people as they actually were. No flattery, no performance, no idealization. In an era when portrait painters were expected to flatter their subjects, Yeats painted conviction, intelligence and character. You can see it in every brushstroke of this portrait — the set of Maud's jaw, the focus in her eyes, the quiet certainty of a woman who knew exactly who she was and what she stood for.
