Heavy cloud banks roll over a pale beach, with a thin line of sea at the right edge, washed in blue and violet-grey. It is a sketchbook page, only 11.8 × 19.3 cm, made fast enough to keep the weather as it was. It is in the National Gallery of Ireland.

About the Artist

Nathaniel Hone the Younger (1831–1917), born in Dublin, spent years in France before returning to Ireland to paint its coast and skies. The National Gallery of Ireland holds a large group of his sketchbook pages. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
