Ireland's Eye and Lambay Island seen from Howth, in charcoal and wash with white highlights, by Christopher Machell.
Sailing boats lie off a shingle shore at the left, small rowing boats cross the bay, and a pair of figures stand at the water's edge below a dark headland. Ireland's Eye sits low on the horizon, with Lambay Island fainter beyond. Machell used charcoal and wash lifted with white highlights on buff paper, on a sheet about 32 × 40 cm. This work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
About the Artist
Christopher Machell (1747–1827) was a draughtsman who recorded the Irish countryside in the late eighteenth century, from the Wicklow glens to the Dublin demesnes and the north. His wash drawings are among the National Gallery of Ireland's best records of how those places looked.
