Harry Clarke's 1919 plate for Poe's Ligeia — a widower calling his dead wife's name into the dark, printed as an archival art print.

In Poe's story a man cannot accept that Ligeia is dead. Years later, keeping watch over the body of his second wife, Rowena, he sees colour return to her cheeks and the shroud begin to stir. The eyes open — and they are not Rowena's. Clarke takes the narrator's cry, "I would call aloud upon her name", and draws a tall spectral figure rising through ornate patterning, the line between the living and the dead already dissolving.

Clarke (1889–1931), the Dublin stained-glass artist, drew twenty-four plates for Harrap's 1919 edition of Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination, every one in black and white. Few are as formally beautiful as this one.

It hangs well in a study, a library or a bedroom, anywhere the detail rewards a second look. Made to order, shipped worldwide and backed by hundreds of verified customer reviews.
