Collection: Helen Mabel Trevor
Old women, fishermen's kitchens and a painter who looks straight at both.
Helen Mabel Trevor (1831–1900), born in Loughbrickland, Co. Down, made her career in Paris and Brittany. She studied under Carolus-Duran, Henner and Merson, and showed at the Paris Salon — where The Fisherman's Mother, painted at Douarnenez in 1892, hung in 1893. Her Breton portraits and interiors are patient, unsentimental and quietly dignified: the people in them are individuals, never types. The Fisherman's Mother, her Self-Portrait and her Breton cottage interior are in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
